How it's calculated

  1. Range = swing high − swing low. 1.2000 − 1.1000 = 0.1000.
  2. Uptrend (the price rose from the low to the high): retracement = high − range × ratio. 38.2% → 1.1618, 50% → 1.1500, 61.8% → 1.1382.
  3. Downtrend (the price fell from the high to the low): retracement = low + range × ratio. 38.2% → 1.1382.
  4. Extensions are measured from the start of the move beyond its end: uptrend low + range × ratio (161.8% → 1.2618), downtrend high − range × ratio (161.8% → 1.0382).

Questions

Which high and low should I use?
The start and end of the move you are measuring: the lowest low and the highest high of an upswing, or the other way round for a downswing. Different swings give different levels.
Why are 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% used?
38.2% and 61.8% come from ratios of the Fibonacci sequence; 50% is not a Fibonacci ratio but is commonly added. These are conventions traders watch, not laws of the market.
What is the difference between retracements and extensions?
Retracements lie inside the swing and mark how far the price pulled back. Extensions lie beyond the end of the swing and are used as possible targets if the move continues.
Why do my chart's levels differ?
Charting tools let you draw from either end of the swing and use different extension conventions. This calculator measures retracements from the end of the move and extensions from its start, as shown above.
