How it's calculated

  1. Profit in the quote currency = (close − open) × contract size × lots for a buy, (open − close) × contract size × lots for a sell.
  2. EUR/USD buy 1.1000 → 1.1050, 1 lot: 0.0050 × 100,000 = +$500.00. A sell from 1.1050 to 1.1000 earns the same.
  3. Conversion: the profit is converted into your account currency at the close price. USD/JPY buy 150.00 → 151.20, 1 lot: 1.20 × 100,000 = 120,000 JPY ÷ 151.20 = +$793.65.

Questions

Why is the profit converted at the close price?
The profit is earned in the quote currency at the moment the position closes, so platforms convert it at the price at that moment. For USD/JPY on a USD account that is the close price itself.
Are swaps and commissions included?
No. The result is the price profit only. Subtract the commission and add or subtract swaps from your platform's statement to get the net result.
How do I calculate a loss?
Enter the prices as they were. A buy closed below the open price, or a sell closed above it, shows a negative result.
Why does my platform show a slightly different number?
Platforms convert at their own live rates and may include the spread in the conversion. Enter your platform's conversion rate to match it.
